Poetry & Publishing

*Note: This class is not offered through JPS this summer. Jeanine will teach this course at Hugo House from 10a - 12p PT on Tuesdays, July 1 - August 12 (skip date: 7/15) on Zoom.

Introductory/Intermediate

Students will generate 4-6 new poems, participate in a mock editorial committee, and gain a thorough understanding of how to submit work to literary journals for publication. We’ll read and write poems inspired by a wide array of contemporary poets and will become familiar along the way with the literary journals to which we aspire. All will finish the class by sending at least one submission, which will include a new, strong cover letter.

Graduates of this class have gone on to publish poems in some of the best literary magazines in the country, including North American Review, Greensboro Review, Nimrod, New Ohio Review, Southern Review, and elsewhere.

Students should have at least 4 poems they feel ready and excited to publish. Please reach out with any questions or concerns.

Feedback from previous students

"I love writing, but submitting is excruciating for me. I thought this class would jump-start me into sending my stuff out. It did that and much more."

"Submitting my material to publications always seemed very daunting, and Jeanine helped break down the barriers to submitting for me. She made the act of submitting easy, and she was very transparent and open about her own methodologies and practices that she uses to keep track of publications, etc."

“The resources and links to various journals were very helpful. I feel much better organized in my submission process. I loved the tip about creating packets of poems to submit - it's much easier to send things out that way.”

“So practical! I learned a lot. Loved the combination of craft and business. I left every class with material I can continue to shape, and I especially appreciate have a complete, peer-and-instructor reviewed submissions packet that I can use and revise for the rest of the year and beyond. Submitting to journals on the last day of class was a fitting goodbye. I felt proud and accomplished.”

“Jeanine is a great model, her class pacing is amazing -- she fills each moment with generative writing, reading poems, learning the content (online literary journals/submission process) and even small group work.”
